Spheres and Splinters

Friday 12 November 2010

Spheres & Splinters brings musical phenomenon Tod Machover together with cellist Peter Gregson, ambsonic sound designer Ben Bloomberg and leading visual collective United Visual Artists in a brand new collaboration. Together they will explore the properties of acoustic and electronic music to create a unique experience for audiences at Snape and Kings Place. The evening also includes new work by six emerging composers taking part in Aldeburgh Music’s New Music New Media course led by Tod and Milton Mermikides, using the latest electro-acoustic technology.

Professor of Music and Media at MIT in Boston, Tod Machover has been hailed “America’s most wired composer” by the LA Times. He is widely recognized as one of the most significant and innovative composers of his generation, and has composed for the likes of Yo-Yo Ma and the Los Angeles Philharmonic as well as having designed unique hyper-instruments and interactive performance systems used by Peter Gabriel and Prince (see below for more info). For Spheres and Splinters, he will bring a state of the art ambisonic sound system from MIT which will combine with a unique exploration of ‘sound splinters’ taken from the cello and other sources, to fragment the musical material in highly sophisticated and aurally thrilling ways. Tod and cellist Peter Gregson will collaborate with United Visual Artists, a UK-based collective whose installations have stunned audiences of Teatro Sociale di Como and New York Fashion Week alike.
In the first half of the concert six emerging composers on Aldeburgh’s acclaimed New Music New Media course, led by Tod Machover and tutored by Milton Mermikides, and a small group of instrumentalists will offer a snapshot into the latest multi-media and electro-acoustic work. There will also be a chance to hear from all of the artists in a pre-event talk.
